Grants your government can apply for

Hundreds of open federal grants.Filtered to your jurisdiction.

As of Oct 27, 2026, Grants.gov listed 424 open federal grants that name cities, counties or special districts as eligible, and 436 that name tribal governments or tribal organizations. Infrastructure & transportation

Hazard mitigation & FEMA

FEMA grants for local governments that reduce flood, wildfire and storm risk before a disaster, and recovery funding after one, often passed through your state emergency management agency.

Housing, downtown revitalization, brownfield cleanup and economic-development grants for cities, counties and special districts.

Tribal governments

Grants for tribes: programs set aside for federally recognized tribes and tribal organizations, from the Justice, Interior, HUD and Health and Human Services departments.

Grants for parks, conservation, clean water, energy efficiency and resilience projects run by local governments.

Before you apply

Most missed grants are missed on paperwork.Check these first.

  • ✓Active SAM.gov registration and Unique Entity ID, renewed every year
  • ✓Grants.gov account with an authorized representative who can submit
  • ✓Cost-share plan for programs that require a local match
  • ✓Council, board or tribal resolution where the funder requires one

Grant writing for municipalities starts with the right program. Every match in your report notes its cost-share requirement and whether the program runs through your state agency, so you see the real budget and the right door before the agent drafts anything.

How it works

From UEI to application.Without the busywork.

1

Match

Tell the agent who you are and enter your EIN or SAM.gov UEI. It verifies your organization and matches it against open federal, state and foundation grants you’re eligible for.

2

Draft

Pick a grant. The agent drafts the application to that funder’s requirements: need statement, program, outcomes and budget narrative.

3

Submit

You review and submit. The agent tracks every deadline and drafts the reports funders expect after an award.

Many federal programs open once a year.Miss the window and the project waits for the next budget cycle.

Grant scams

Real grants nevercost money to receive.

Every listing in your report links to the funder’s own page. If an offer shows any of these signs, walk away.

  • !Charges a fee before you receive the money
  • !Promises a guaranteed award or “free money you never pay back”
  • !Found you through a social media ad or cold DM
  • !Won’t meet, and wants full payment upfront
  • !Asks for your bank login or card details to “deposit” a grant
  • !Offers a personal grant — federal grants to individuals are rare
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What do local governments and tribes need to apply for federal grants?
An active SAM.gov registration with its 12-character Unique Entity ID, and a Grants.gov account with an authorized organization representative who can submit. SAM.gov registration is free and must be renewed every year, so check its expiration date before a deadline.
What is the difference between formula and competitive grants?
Formula grants, such as many HUD and transportation programs, are allocated to eligible governments by a set formula, often passed through the state. Competitive grants are awarded by application against other applicants. Your report lists open competitive opportunities and notes where a program runs through your state agency instead.
Are there grants only for tribal governments?
Yes. Many federal programs are set aside for federally recognized tribes, and some also accept tribal organizations, such as the Department of Justice Coordinated Tribal Assistance Solicitation, Administration for Native Americans grants and HUD Indian housing programs. The report labels each grant by which tribal applicant types it accepts.
Do federal grants require a local match?
Many do. Cost share ranges from none to 50 percent or more, and some programs reduce it for small, rural or economically disadvantaged communities. Every match in your report notes the cost-share requirement so you can plan the budget before you apply.
What happens after a federal award?
You report on spending and progress on the funder's schedule, and an entity that spends $1,000,000 or more in federal awards in a fiscal year needs a single audit. The agent tracks reporting deadlines and drafts the progress reports for your review.
